Retail Sales 2015…It’s All About The Gas

According to Cushman & Wakefield:

“Retail sales have been a disappointment in the first four months of 2015, declining by more than 1.0% instead of rising as widely anticipated. Bad weather was part of the reason for the decline as the nation had its second consecutive severe winter. Perhaps even more important was the decline in gasoline prices. The decline in gasoline prices has masked an increase in retail sales for other goods. While retail sales have not been as strong as we would like to see, they are not as weak as the headline numbers suggest. The key to future retail sales growth will be faster wage growth. When wages increase more rapidly, spending growth will also pick up.”
