MSP Retail Openings & Closings (Q3 2013)

Activity slowed down in Q3 2013 for the overall Twin Cities market. This is typical as most retailers opening new stores in the second-half of the year tend to do so closer to the holiday season to take advantage of the shopping rush.

However, downtown Minneapolis was abuzz as Whole Foods opened its doors at Hennepin and Washington in late September. It is part of the new 222 Hennepin project, which includes 286 upscale apartments. The grocer was welcomed by the neighborhood and the growing residential base in downtown, especially in the North Loop. As more apartments and condos come online in the next 12-18 months, more retailers providing convenience goods and services are expected to enter the market. Similar activity is also anticipated in downtown St. Paul, which is also enjoying a boom in residential growth.
