MSP Retail Openings & Closings (Q2 2013)

The retail market continued to improve in Q2 2013 thanks to a higher than expected amount of leasing activity in the community and neighborhood centers. Vacancy for the greater Minneapolis / St. Paul metropolitan area is at a new five-year low of 7.7%.

An example of the turnaround that the retail industry has enjoyed in the past few years is Cedar Point Commons in Richfield.  It is a 350,000 square foot community center that opened in November 2007 with Target and Home Depot as its two key anchors.  However, much of small shop space remained vacant for years during the economic downturn.  In the last 12 to 18 months, the project has been able to successfully achieve a 97% occupancy level, with Anytime Fitness and Noodles & Co. joining the tenant roster just this past month.
